Schools open after Labor Day in Minnesota, which has a significant impact on local monthly labor market data.
Students leave the workforce, which drops the unemployment rate. Teachers and school professionals return to work (local government employment which includes school districts rose 686 in September in the greater St. Cloud metro area), raising average hourly earnings. Readers should not infer too much about the labor market from these readings; seasonal changes in the rest of the year will see drops in construction employment but rises in retail workers.
